What is Jikiden Reiki?

What does Jikiden Reiki mean?

Mr. Usui Mikao discovered a treatment technique that uses a force of energy called “Reiki”. However, the word Reiki had been used in Japan long before Mr. Usui Mikao’s discovery. In Japanese, Reiki means universal life force energy, but it can also mean "mystical or miraculous energy”.  The latter comes from the understanding that the same energy runs through everything: nature, people and animals. It is an entirely natural thing.

The original term Mr. Usui Mikao used for Reiki treatment is "Shin Shin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryoho". Translated, this means "Usui Reiki Treatment Method for Improvement of Body and Mind”. Jikiden means “directly passed down” or “directly taught”. Thus, Jikiden Reiki is the original Reiki passed down from the teachings of Chuijiro Hayashi and Usui Sensei, without changes. It is the most authentic Reiki system available today and comes straight from Japan.

Over the last few decades, Jikiden Reiki has become increasingly recognized as an effective and important holistic health therapy and is growing fast in Europe and North America. Trials and studies are now being held in hospitals and by front-line medical staff.

Mikao Usui defined 5 principles for Reiki called Gokai, that practitioners and students are recommended to recite every day. These 5 principles are not religious, but the Gokai, or precepts of Reiki, were derived from the Waka poetry of the Japanese Meiji emperor. They can be used by anyone, including Reiki patients, to support and improve their body and mind. This is deliberate, as the enlightened founder Sensei Usui wanted his Reiki to be for everyone. When spoken in Japanese the Gokai have a rhythm like a mantra. They are an essential part of Reiki practice.

The 5 Reiki Principles as written by Mikao Usui are as follows:

Kyo dakewa – (Just for today)
Ikaru na - (Do not be angry)
Shinpai suna - (Do not worry)
Kansha shite - (Be grateful)
Gyo o hagame – (Do your duties)
Hito ni shinsetsu ni – (Be kind to others)

In Japan, people traditionally believe that mystical powers dwell in words. This concept is called ”Kototama” (word spirit/soul). The words we say have significant power.  If we recite the Gokai everyday we seed these words into our life, allowing them to influence our environment, body, mind, and soul. By chanting aloud the words, their energy manifests in the world. This idea comes from Shintoism, which had a significant influence on traditional Japanese Reiki. Shintoism is the endemic spirituality of Japan before Buddhism arrived.

Jikiden Reiki has benefits for the spirit. When Usui Sensei created his method of Reiki treatment, he was aware that Reiki energy helps the 'tamashi' (or spirit) to begin to wake up. All of life is spiritual, and we are spiritual beings having a human experience. As such, Reiki helps remind us there is more to life than the physical reality we can see around us. It helps us to find and feel the connections we have with all life. This comes from the ancient ideas of Shinto, which understands that we are all branched from the same source energy, the big 'tamashi', or spirit. This means that humans, animals and the natural world around us are all connected at our essence with each other. That is why it is so important to be living in respect and harmony with nature — it allows us to truly connect to the incredible source of energy that runs through everything.

What does Jikiden Reiki treat?

Jikiden Reiki is always beneficial and effective in activating a person’s natural healing system, boosting the body’s natural cleansing process and empowering the immune system. It is effective in helping practically every known illness by tackling the origin of the illness.  Each treatment is a calming, relaxing and peaceful experience that also helps to relieve pain. It is for anyone who seeks a sense of wellbeing, mindfulness and holistic health. Jikiden Reiki can be used to treat physical as well as mental health issues.

Physical health issues that can be treated range from minor cuts, or a common cold, to chronic illnesses, burns and serious injuries. In general we aim to direct the treatment to one or more specific areas where there is a build-up of byosen (toxins). During a Reiki session the focus can be on the specific areas where you have clear symptoms or pain (byosen build-up).  The hands are also used to sense areas in the body where there are accumulations of toxins (often these areas feel painful, stiff, uncomfortable and are out of balance). These areas with byosen can be treated by placing the hands on them. In doing so, the Reiki energy is used to break down and eliminate such toxins more effectively. Once toxins are being eliminated, the Reiki energy helps to balance the body’s hormones and systems. The body will then move more easily into a state of balance and health.

Most Reiki treatments are hands-on, conducted by the practitioner by laying their hands on the clothed body of the recipient, allowing the Reiki energy to flow through the body. The warmth of the hands (physical warmth and Reiki warmth) helps the recipient to relax or feel calm and at peace, optimizing their physical and emotional state. If Reiki is given frequently, it will also help calm the mind.

Enkaku Reiki is a distance Reiki treatment that can be offered at any distance between practitioner and recipient. It is activated by a special technique that was created by Mikao Usui. It is ideal if the recipient is in an appropriate situation (eg. resting, sleeping, etc. ). Enkaku treatments can be given for physical as well as psychological issues.

Psychological Reiki treatments (“Seiheki Chiryo” in Japanese) can be used for many different psycho-emotional/mental health issues like unwanted habits, addictions, stress, anxiety, trauma, depression, anger or other forms of serious mental illness. Any problem of the mind can be treated with psychological Reiki, including bed wetting by children. This treatment is completely safe and has been used for almost a century in Japan. The treatment can feel intense and give an emotional response, such as crying. The Seiheki treatment is hands-off. As our mind, body and spirit are all connected this treatment will also benefit your overall health.

How does it work?

Reiki therapy is offered by a trained practitioner. During treatments, the practitioner places their hands directly on the recipient. While doing this, the practitioner effectively acts as a conduit for Reiki energy that passes through them in great abundance and transmits this energy to the receiver through the hands in a compassionate and meditative way. The treatment assists, boosts and reactivates the recipients natural and innate healing ability, allowing the body to restore and heal itself. Reiki is spiritual in nature, but it is not a religion. Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Reiki treatments induce the body into a state of relaxation, similar to meditation. It creates a feeling of peace, security and well-being.

Reiki will heal the body from the source (of the problem) and during treatments it will stir the root of the issue and bring it to the surface. This might mean that you temporarily feel pain/discomfort where you did not feel it before. This a normal reaction by the body as it is part of the healing process. The duration of Reiki sessions can vary and in general can be as short as 20 minutes to as long as 90 minutes. The length of each sessions depends on the reaction and condition of the body.

When?

Jikiden Reiki treatments can be offered to anyone interested in holistic healing for physical and mental health. Treatments can be offered as a sole healing therapy for the recipient or it can be offered as part of a treatment plan consisting of more than one healing modality. Reiki is no substitute for medical treatment, rather, it is meant to be complimentary to conventional medicine. Reiki is always beneficial, and helps people maintain good health.

Who is Jikiden Reiki for?

Jikiden Reiki can be offered prenatally to a growing baby, or to anyone of any age. It can also be offered to pets and other animals. When animals are sick, Reiki tends to calm them and help them heal faster, just like with humans.
